  • Another delightful slow burner from Richard Chartier’s LINE imprint, Percussion Studies is a series of soft focus percussion experiments from Ithaca Trio’s Oliver Thurley. Serious gong bath vibes here – one for fans of Philip Corner or Thomas Köner.

Thurley moves into impressively minimalist territory on Percussion Studies but never loses track of his central theme; this is music built around percussive instruments, and while he’s not beating out rhythms he exploresthe tonal characteristics of his drums. The ‘subcuteous’ studies are a series of eight shorter tracks that allow the sound of the listening environment to encroach the sonic territory of his “isolated moments suspended in negative space”. The result is a sequence of ghostly traces of resonant humming and wobbly drone that cast an eerie shadow across the album.

The almost 25-minute long “sanguine” is doomier still, made from bass drum and cymbal hum that seems to wash with almost tidal intensity. It’s moving music that draws the spirit from the core of your being.
